Hannah Starkey Emulation
For my emulation project, I chose to focus on British photographer Hannah Starkey. With a rather theatrical theme, Starkey describes her work as "explorations of everyday experiences and observations of inner city life from a female perspective." Much of Starkey's work has a very specific focus on women and their daily routines. For example, loitering in the street, sitting and drinking at a café and driving. They're incredibly alluring and suggest a story to be told.
Her works capture the "in between" of daily routine, but also express a sense of detachment from those daily routines. Many of her works are reflective, both in facial emotion and literal reflection with a consistent use of mirrors. Each of the women in these shots express a sense of loneliness and isolation regardless of their environment. These photographs are incredibly intimate and the use of bright colors seems to contrast with the story Starkey is trying to tell. Each of these works leaves the viewer wanting to know more. While working on this project I hope to capture the same sense of emotional reflection and be able to do so with the use of rich color in mind.
